Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o is writing a children’s book that’s slated to drop in 2019.

The New York Times reports the 12 Years A Slave actress will title the book Sulwe which means star. The word comes from her native language Luo.  The book will be catered to kids between the ages of 5 and 7.

The book will tell the story of 5-year-old Sulwe growing up in Kenya . Sulwe has the darkest skin out of everyone in her family, which causes her to find a way to lighten her skin so she doesn’t stand out.

Throughout the book Sulwe goes on an adventure that helps her along with advice from her mother discover the beauty she’s always had.

This book deals with the harsh but ever present issue that faces so many kids today. This story is near to Nyong’o’s heart because she experienced the same thing as a child. She struggled with accepting herself as she was.

She remembers becoming more aware of her differences while in school when others would make remarks. It really hit home when she heard the language of “brown and pretty” used to describe and compliment her sister with a lighter complexion.

With this book, Nyong’o hopes to help kids see both their inner and outer beauty and to love themselves for who they are.
