Dr. Cornel West Ferguson & Clergy Protesters Go to Jail

While other clergy and activists raced to Ferguson recently to give speeches, Dr. Cornel West said he did not come to give a speech but to go to jail and that brothers and sisters he did!

It is being reported that “Moral Monday”  and Ferguson October led by Dr. Cornel West and other noted local clergy, appeared to be  the most  organized demonstration carried out by protestors over the past two months who are still outratged over the death of a 18-year-old unarmed  black male resident, Michael Brown by a white police officer on August 9 and  their frustrated with the criminal justice system.    Dr. Cornel WEst and his clerical possie aim is to draw attention to not just Michael Brown’s senseless death, but  to n to draw attention to police shootings nationwide.

Dr. West and his colleagues started began thier march at the Wellspring Church in Ferguson, not dismayed by the heavy rain, the group organized themselves, began using bullhorns and announcing the many names of people who have been killed by police nationwide.  Allegedly as the group approaced the police statoin, the cops was ready for them dressed in their riot gear and formed in that familiar protective line in an attempt to block the protesters from the police station.

It is being reported that by USA Today that  three protesters drew a chalk outline of a man lying on the ground. March organizer the Rev. Osagyefo Sekou called it “a memorial for the body of Michael Brown.”

“This space has already been sanctified by the youth, and we just want to honor what they’ve done,” Sekou said.

Clergy members then faced the police officers and asked them to confess their sins and repent for the deaths of black youths.

“We are saying that these officers are members of our society and that they are part of a racist and sinful system,” Sekou said. “We are offering them the opportunity to repent and to be reconciled into our community.”

After the crowd stood and chanted before the police, West and Sekou crossed the police line. Police handcuffed both men and put them in a police vehicle. A total of 43 people were arrested outside the Ferguson police station on charges of disturbing the peace.

“Arrests were not made until protesters started bumping police officer’s shields and eventually forcing through the police skirmish line,” St. Louis County Police said in a written statement.

West had told a crowd gathered at an interfaith event on Sunday night that he wanted police to arrest him. “I didn’t come here to give a speech,” West said. “I came here to go to jail!”
