It appears that Oprah Winfrey has a mega hit on her hands,  Greenleaf’ successfully debut last week. The 10 PM premiere of the megachurch family drama starring Merle Dandridge, Keith David, Lynn Whitfield and Oprah herself drew 3.04 million viewers and a 2.18 rating in OWN’s target market of women 25-54. That makes Greenleaf the biggest series launch in OWN’s five-year history.

Now of course Everybody is buzzing around that Oprah Winfrey’s Greenleaf is disrespecting the Church.

I totally disagree, I think Greenleaf clearly depicts what’s happening within the church. Now that is not to say if you are a member of a mega-church that Oprah Winfrey is talking about your church, in fact, she made it very clear by calling Bishop TD Jakes and letting him know from her mouth to his ears, that Greenleaf is definitely not a loose version of the Potters House.

“I spoke to T.D. Jakes and said: ‘I just want you to know I’m doing a show about a megachurch and the only resemblance to you is that our main character is called Bishop and you’re a bishop.’ And he says, ‘I’m happy to hear that because I’ve heard some things about it …'” Winfrey recounted in a Q&A, according to Eurweb.

The media mogul added, “I said, ‘I just want you to know, from my lips to your ears, I have nothing but deep respect and regard for the Church. I, Oprah Winfrey, am going to do nothing, ever, that disrespects the Church.'”

So that being said we all know that Oprah is not trying to disrespect the church. Unfortunately, these things do happen in the church both mega and storefronts. It’s painful to watch I know but sometimes the truth hurts and the day has come that Pastors who are operating in a disrespectful manner to the church and its members need a wake-up call and handled.

it’s funny to me that the Pastor always seems to get a pass when it comes to Him/Her disrespecting the church and that is the problem for me. We need more shows like Greenleaf to come on TV to make church leaders rethink what master they are really serving, God or a servant who was called to shepherd God’s sheep and elect to serve themselves and family instead. This is not to sy that all Pastors are bad Shepherds but it is high time that those rotten apples are revealed and thrown out of the church that they are disrespecting on oh so many levels. Greenleaf is showing us the good, bad and ugly that happens in church and I LOVE IT!!!!

Now let’s talk about it, shall we???
