The Church Lady’s Take ON Greenleaf

It appears that Oprah Winfrey has a mega hit on her hands,  Greenleaf’ successfully debut last week. The 10 PM premiere of the megachurch family drama starring Merle Dandridge, Keith David, Lynn Whitfield and Oprah herself drew 3.04 million viewers and a 2.18 rating in OWN’s target market of women 25-54. That makes Greenleaf the biggest series launch in OWN’s five-year history.

Now of course Everybody is buzzing around that Oprah Winfrey’s Greenleaf is disrespecting the Church.

I totally disagree, I think Greenleaf clearly depicts what’s happening within the church. Now that is not to say if you are a member of a mega-church that Oprah Winfrey is talking about your church, in fact, she made it very clear by calling Bishop TD Jakes and letting him know from her mouth to his ears, that Greenleaf is definitely not a loose version of the Potters House.

“I spoke to T.D. Jakes and said: ‘I just want you to know I’m doing a show about a megachurch and the only resemblance to you is that our main character is called Bishop and you’re a bishop.’ And he says, ‘I’m happy to hear that because I’ve heard some things about it …'” Winfrey recounted in a Q&A, according to Eurweb.

The media mogul added, “I said, ‘I just want you to know, from my lips to your ears, I have nothing but deep respect and regard for the Church. I, Oprah Winfrey, am going to do nothing, ever, that disrespects the Church.'”

Check out Oprah’s Winfrey’s mission for Greenleaf:
So that being said we all know that Oprah is not trying to disrespect the church. Unfortunately, these things do happen in the church both mega and storefronts. It’s painful to watch I know but sometimes the truth hurts and the day has come that Pastors who are operating in a disrespectful manner to the church and its members need a wake-up call and handled.

it’s funny to me that the Pastor always seems to get a pass when it comes to Him/Her disrespecting the church and that is the problem for me. We need more shows like Greenleaf to come on TV to make church leaders rethink what master they are really serving, God or a servant who was called to shepherd God’s sheep and elect to serve themselves and family instead. This is not to sy that all Pastors are bad Shepherds but it is high time that those rotten apples are revealed and thrown out of the church that they are disrespecting on oh so many levels. Greenleaf is showing us the good, bad and ugly that happens in church and I LOVE IT!!!!

Now let’s talk about it, shall we???

First let me say, I don’t have a problem with Oprah exposing the hypocrisy of the Black church. This is much overdue, and Oprah has a reach that others can only dream about in this regard. Because she is so influential, I do have a problem with her promoting her ‘watered down’ version of Christianity, I get it. She has every right to promote her views, on her show. But that doesn’t mean I have to like it. Her view of Christianity is extremely flawed. Nevertheless she expertly uses this ‘show’ to promulgate this false view of the Christian Faith. Case in point in the first installment of the mockudrama, One of the main characters Grace/Gigi is asked some very direct questions regarding Jesus, Christianity and the Bible. How did Grace/Gigi, respond when asked if she was still a ‘Christian’? She says, “I think that there are ‘many ways to commune with God”. ?? Her mother then asks concerning the Bible, “Grace what do you believe”. Grace says that she believes that “The Bible is one useful tool to see into the heart of God , in the Christian tradition.” ?? Her sister-in-law reminds her that the Bible teaches that Christ is the only way to God and asks her what she believes regarding that fact. Grace’s response is the classic ‘new age’ version of Christianity that you have heard Oprah spout on more than one occasion. Grace says that Jesus is “A part of everything that tries, Plants try to grow, animals try to survive, people try to better themselves to get ahead. Everything tries to do something. I guess I think that Christianity is one way that the trying part of people tries to connect with the trying part of everything else” The Bishop ‘amen’s’ this answer and suggests that this is a message he thinks should be preached at Calvary (their Church). The mother who is already being portrayed as one of the villains of the show, responds with the classic (truthful) retort to such new age nonsense. The mother says to Grace’s that her definition of Christianity “has ‘nothing to do with Jesus and price He paid on Calvary for my sins’ The mother’s position is the correct one, and Grace’s position is the incorrect one, but Oprah has managed right out of the gate to turn that on its head. So let’s not be naive, exposing the sins of the Church is not the only purpose of this series. This series is also a way for Oprah and those who think like her to expose people to an alternate view of Christianity, under the guise of reform/enlightenment. Once again this demonstrates that whatever the claim, Oprah’s version of Christianity is at odds with what the Christian faith really is. This begs the question that how is that her friends and mentors (T.D.Jakes, Joel Olesteen) are able to align themselves so closely and comfortably with her given her theological leanings. ??? Birds of a feather…… ??

Great point Waren, I never really considered that!!

Warren, I agree with you wholeheartedly. In addition to exposing sin in the Church. God is using Oprah to expose those who have accepted the “Anything Goes” Gospel as long as we sprinkle it with scripture and occasionally mention the Name of Jesus.

No Oprah’s “Greenleaf” does not disrespect the Church. If anything, God is using her to expose the Church. I will most certainly pray for Oprah but let’s be honest. “Greenleaf” is not a figment of Oprah’s imagination. The names have been changed to protect the guilty. God is exposing the Church which in many cases has become a den of thieves. Let us not lose focus and make Oprah the target. She is not the cause for God’s judgment which shall begin in the house of God. It is time to repent!

      I agree 100% Monica

greenleaf, just depicts what happens in the church behind the scene. this program is very mild compared to what really goes on, like ministers grooming and having sex with children or the sheep, that have been entrusted to his care via GOD. SO FAR I HAVE NOT SEEN THE PASTOR SIDE PIECE SITTING IN THE FRONT ROW WITH THE PASTORS OUT OF WEDLOCK CHILD, OR THE SISTER WHO DON’T WEAR UNDERWEAR WHO LIKE TO SIT UP FRONT WITH SHORT DRESSES AND NO DRAWS. HOWEVER, IT IS STILL EARLY. OH, I FORGOT ONE, THE CHURCHES WHERE THE PASTOR WEARS TAILOR MADE SUITS AND HAS MEMBERS OR PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY WHERE THE CHURCH IS LOCATED WITH THEIR BASIC NEEDS BEING MET. BUT THESE SAME PREACHER-PIMPS DRIVE THRU SEEING POVERTY AND CHILDREN HUNGRY
