The Church Lady’s Take on Jason Russell, Children Invisible and Kony 2012 (video)

by The Churchlady

"The Church Lady of the www.thechurchladyblogs.com"
I am sure that you all have heard the naked meltdown  story  about Jason Russell creator  of a campaign  to bring about pressure to arrest The militia leader Joseph Kony who  is wanted by the International Criminal Court on charges of committing war crimes and creator of the Viral Video Kony 2012.

While the focus is now on the famous naked meltdown, I think that we should go back to the real focus which is capturing Joseph Kony.

After reading the many naked stories I decided to view Kony 2012 you tube video  in its entirety. After watching the movie, I believe that Jason and his team has done a remarkable job over the course of 10 years (not just the last week couple of weeks) to bring about awareness.

I think it is important to stay focused on the fact that this organization brought hundreds of thousands of people together over the course of time  to  force the   United States, to launch a military mission in Uganda last year to stop Joseph Kony and other Lord’s Resistance Army leaders. U.S. officials said the brutal militia had pushed at least 400,000 people out of their homes. In addition to raping, mutilating and even killing children.

When you view the video you will see that Invisible Children  have a brilliant plan and evidently knows what it’s doing, as over 30 million people viewed the video in one week and had celebrities tweeting about it.

Yes, Jason had a naked melt down, but what about the mission?  Yes, they are asking for money, but do you think that to accomplish something of this magnitude is going to be free?

All the back and forth about the non-profit organization financial objectives,  that is the world we live in today.  What Invisible Children is doing is no different that what politicians are doing to get their message out.  They send you a tweet, an E-mail or Facebook message and at the end of their message,  they ask you to give.  Why is that an organization bringing about awareness, that is clearly a problem, asking for donations a big issue?  I just don’t understand that.  Are they suppose to operate on thin air?

The LA  Times issued a  statement by his wife, Danica Russell, and other members of Russell’s family suggested that the criticism of the “Invisible Children” video about African militia leader Joseph Kony may have contributed to Russell’s bizarre behavior.

“… Because of how personal the film is, many of the attacks against it were also very personal and Jason took them very hard,” said the statement.

“Jason has dedicated his adult life to this cause, leading to [the] KONY 2012 [video],” the family statement said. “We thought a few thousand people would see the film, but in less than a week, millions of people around the world saw it.”

I am posting the video below and hope that you will take the time to view it in its entirety and not let others convince you that Jason Russell is other than a person under stress that had a meltdown as a result of trying to bring about awareness to a very important endeavor.

Funeral Repast or Celebration of Life?

by The Churchlady

You know every now and then you come across a person with an amazing idea that turns into a very prosperous business venture.  I had been hearing  the buzz about these so-called ” Celebrations of Life”  that people all over the country were starting to have and I thought what is that?  I later learned that  it is definitely not your typical repast held after the funeral service.  I also found the brainchild behind this new trend, Ms. Phoebe Wallace Echols, an event planner and caterer for more than 10 years and founder/ CEO of

Peace Celebrations

Basically, Phoebe, helps families and friends gather information to remember the good times, and tell their loved ones life’s story. Her  goal is to plan fitting Celebration of Life Tributes that reflect the lives they  lived. Family and friends will have lasting impressions for years to come.

What I found intriguing about this organization is that they  provide unique celebrations not just your typical Baptist Repast immediately following the funeral service or internment.

They plan events centered around the person’s life and include things like  memory galleries, videos, music, catered meals, sport outings, beach visits and more.

Now don’t get them mistaken with a mortuary y’all, they DO NOT HANDLE FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS, they plan celebrations.

I immediately thought of my trifling family members who always telling me  ”I don’t want no funeral, put me in a pine box or cremate me, now I think that’s silly and selfish, but hey to each his own, cause that was  exactly what I was going to do with them, but then I thought about the people they will leave behind, how will they experience closure.   Peaceful Celebrations will help me bring closure for my auntie when my cousin pookie is too trifling to get his stuff in order.  (lol)

Now y’all can go to  Peace Celebrations to get all scoop on what they have to offer but here  are some highlights:

  • Celebration of Life Tributes honor the deceased.
  • A Celebration of Life Tribute reflects on the life lived. It focuses on the loved one and his or her contributions that were made to family and friends.
  • The Celebration gives friends and family the opportunity to express love and affection, share stories, and reminisce about good times.
  • Celebration of Life Tributes are generally positive and uplifting. The family creates the tone.
  • Many families still have short traditional funerals and immediately after or weeks after they choose to have a Celebration of Life Tribute.
  • Some choose to celebrate their loved one’s life every year.

Congratulations Phoebe, I pray God continues to bless your ministry.

Jericho City of Praise Update Members create Tell All Website-against Church Staff Hostile Takeover

by The Churchlady

So many times, I have to write My Take on the inappropriate actions of a Pastor, this time, however, I have got to take the time to blast the church staff attempted hostile takeover of  both the spiritual and financial leadership of Jericho City Baptist Church.  Based on the staff’s recent court depositions, they  have proven to me that most of what the members are saying is true,  they are, in fact,  operating in the most ungodly manner towards the Shepherd of that house, Joel Peeples.

For the past several months, I have been following the sad saga surrounding one of the mid-atlantic regions largest mega-church, Jericho City of Praise.   A multimillion-dollar ministry that includes everything from a 15,000 +member congregation to offering paid parking for Washington Redskins games,  Jericho’s day-to-day operations and total financial control is in the hands of its church staff, who by the way also serve as the official Trustee Board of the Church. Many members have used thechurchladyblogs.com as a platform to voice their side of the story and chile  If they did not send me proof,  I would have never believed that a church of this magnitude is operating in such an ungodly, incompetent and chaotic manner.

In addition to posting the church staff depositions that confirms what many members have been commenting about, the members of Jericho have now went one step further by creating their own tell it all website:  http://peopleofpraisemd.wordpress.com/videos/

Jericho City of Praise  battle of control includes everything from fighting during the offering in a church service, non disclosure of vital financial information and possible conflicts of interest with regard to IRS TAX Codes,  (Dorothy Williams deposition)  to forming a collaborated smear campaign against Elder Joel based on basically the staff’s displeasure of his alleged arrogant attitude (Clarence Jackson deposition). and, style of preaching.  In my opinion only, Jericho’s church staff appears to be  operating in a spirit of  fear in losing their positions within the church due to the ungodly behavior they have directed to Elder Joel who now and rightfully so, feels they cannot be trusted. What was most disturbing to me was a letter forwarded to Pastor Joel Peeples alerting  him that the Board  (church staff members) have decided to invite another preacher into his pulpit.  to preach one of the two Sunday morning worship services.

From perusing the many depositions posted on their website, each staff member appears to be totally resistant to accepting or acknowledging  any type  leadership from Elder Joel.  The following synopsis, confirmed by the above mentioned depositions, was submitted by one of Jericho’s church members, Amer Banks:

“The employees are just that, employees.  They are not qualified in any way to handle this ministry.  They believe they have authority to say what Pastor Joel should preach on, how long he can preach, whether he can do a “War Cry” or not and what evangelist or artist he can bring in.  These six rogue employees are led by an Ex-Deacon who was removed due to  a failure to conduct himself in a manner befitting a deacon in the Lord’s church.  These six rogue employees/members filed a restraining order against Pastor Joel just 4 days after his mother died (Sunday evening after preaching two church services where he told the church his mother was dead) and before she was even buried.

These six employees/members gave themselves large raises and some of them have either purchased new houses and or luxury cars.  Hmmm!!   What a coincidence?  Their story is that Apostle Betty Peebles, while bed ridden with terminal cancer, just days from death was so moved by how well these six took care of her, that she made a deathbed decision to give them all raises of up to $20,000.00 a piece. Church Lady, I don’t think so.  She was too tight!!

Church Lady, our church has provided parking spaces for the fans attending the Washington Redskins football games for over ten years.  Apostle Peebles negotiated with the Redskins for them to pay the church a large amount of money per game.  After Apostle Peebles got sick the six employees /members cancelled the contract with the Redskins and implemented ‘CASH ONLY’ parking lots. The price went from $25.00 to $35.00 per car and for some stadium events as much as $50.00 each. There are thousands of parking spaces (“Cash Money”), Hmmm!! .   These six employees/members that the Judge put in charge do not give any account of the money taken in and they have publicly said that they do not owe the members any financial reports.  They have refused any and all attempts by the members to get some type of fiscal report.  Outside of these six people, no one really knows how much is taken in at any game, how much is paid out for expenses, how much they spend for the lavish buffets that they enjoy each and every  game, as they rake in the dough.  None of the members know if all the money is accounted for.  Hmmm!!      Church Lady, get this, the same people who take in the money, count the money and write the checks on the money…you get the picture. Hmmm!!  C’mon Church Lady, I smell something foul!!”

Now I have a few questions for the members of Jericho City of Praise:

1.  If you have more than 15,000  members in your church and the church leadership refuses to offer financial accountability to its congregants, why are you continuing to pay your tithes and offerings.   This church staff will only listen when the money dries up, trust me on that one.  Pastor Joel I know this is something that you may not want to hear but it is the truth and you know The Church Lady got to keep it real!

2.  Where are your bylaws?   The depositions that I read kept referring to the church staff advising that Apostle Betty Peeples wanted and felt the need to  create new by-laws. Were they ever created and voted on by the members of the church?   If not where are your old by-laws.  I would suggest you refer to the by-laws of the church which is usually a mandate required by IRS that allows a nonprofit organization to be exempt from income tax.

Further, please know by reading some of the disclosures  made in those depositions by Ms. Williams,  there appears to be many areas that may cause an investigation on your beloved church, so understand that by posting your dirty laundry to the world you are opening up Pandora’s box for the Federal Government to move in.   With that being said.  Jericho members, should for no other reason, demand a call meeting with the church leadership to get your house in order .  The process by which a meeting should be called should be included in your church’s by-laws.

3.  Don’t be mad at the Judge for not giving Elder Joel financial control of the church. The Judge had to rule on what was presented and normally Pastors do NOT maintain financial control of a church.   In many churches, including a mega church, the  financial control is managed  with policies, procedures and processes developed and implemented by a board of trustees that meets monthly to review the financial reports offered by the church’s staff  accountant and or a Chief Financial officer.  After which, reports are made to the Senior Pastor and depending on the by-laws offered to the general memebership at minimum annually.

Members of the Trustee Boards  are almost never allowed to serve as a paid staff member in any capacity. (to avoid conflict of interest and abuse of power) And, finally members of the Trustee Board normally have background experience  and contacts in corporate relations and or finance .

An appointted member of the Trustee board serves as the treasurer and that persons’ duty is to  work along with the Chief Financial Officer/accountant on a weekly/bi-weekly; work with the auditors and report its findings to the Senior Pastor, Trustee Board and in some cases membership at large.

Normally only the trustees  and Treasurer sign checks.  Very seldom, if ever does  the church facilities manager or administrator or even Senior Pastor sign the checks.  I  was very surprised not to read in any of the depositions that the accountants who conduct’s Jericho’s audit do not report these as areas of concern to the leadership, or did they, and it was never reported to the Pastor or membership at large?

When I read deposition offered by the church’s CFO and learned that she did not have a clue as to what the  basic IRS  UBIT (unrelated business income tax) form is, it was confirmed for me that she may be in over her head to financially manage this multi-million dollar ministry.   Further her position as both chief financial officer and a voting member of the board of directors clearly allows too much opportunity for possible abuse of power.  Which is why normally church staff do not serve in any voting trustee or deacon board capacity.

3.  Bottom line, the power of the church comes from the church community not six church staff persons, when the members of Jericho stand up and demand accountability of its church leadership, the situation will change.  As long as the church allows Pastor Joel to fight this battle on his own and enables the leadership to divide its house, the house will fall down.

I applaud the brave members who are standing up for their  pastor and getting the word out about this pathetic situation.  I challenge my fellow bloggers to post this story on their sites  to help members of Jericho and Pastor Joel Peeples fight these attacks and finally, I pray for the church staff of Jericho.  I pray that God will soften your hearts to allow you time to pray and hear His Voice.   “Touch Not My Anointing.”

One final note to the members of Jericho, “This battle is not only Pastor  Joel’s, it’s YOURS!

Celebrities and God: They fall Down but God’s Grace and Mercy enables them to Get Back Up (video)

by The Churchlady

Celebrities reference God all the time in their interviews and press junkets, but more often, their actions speak much louder than their words.

It is reassuring for us to have constant reminders that we serve a loving and forgiving God and although we fall down, God allows us to get back up.

Parris Hilton may have said it best as her reasoning why God allows so much grace to celebrities:

Gospel Music: Ministry or Industry? (videos)

by The Churchlady

Recently one of my blogger colleagues Holy Chick asked my opinion on recent comments made by Mali Music during his BET debut of his new video The Job Experience. Specifically, the comment he made about his music being bigger than gospel.
Click here to read Full Article and my response to her question.

After reflecting on her question a little more I came to the conclusion that  My take on the state of Gospel Music MINISTRY today is that  many persons proclaiming to be ministers of gospel music are  in fact NOT. They are performers trying to break into the music industry any way they can.  And those that have been praying to be the next Mahalia Jackson, Dottie Peoples, James Cleveland …. have been operating in churches all their careers and now they want the same fame power and recognition as Jay Z and Beyonce, so they too want to enter into the music industry so they can be packaged up and marketed.

Let’s just keep it real, with the hip-hop and R&B music industry going to hell and a waste basket fast, it is a shame that music producers are now crossing over to cash in on the ministry of Gospel music. Make no mistake about it, Akon taking Mali under his wing and Matthew Knowles crossing over and grabbing Trin-i-tee 5-7 along with Sunday Best Winners, Amber Bullock and Leandria Johnson, is not for the love of Jesus, instead, it is for the love of MONEY!

These men have excellent track records in packaging performers up, marketing and making them stars in the music industry. For years music producers shied away from the gospel music ministry because of the difficulty in separating the music from the message of Jesus Christ. Today is a different story, other genre’s sales are down and this genre is wide open. The beauty for them to enter into the Gospel Music Ministry is that they know they already have a built-in audience, no need to worry about renting large arenas or liability insurance, they can visit a Megachurch on a Sunday morning make a mint selling their  CD’s to their church members,  then have the church sponsor a concert there on Sunday night, not be charged a dime for the space then turn around and charge the pastor a fee for bringing their star there.  (I know it sounds trifling but that’s whats happening out here today)

So it’s no surprise that Mali would make a statement like that because he is right he cannot be compared to a Minister of Gospel Music, because he is not, not even close to it. he is a performer who Akon is going to package up and place him on the church chit-lin circuit.

Now don’t get me wrong, Akon and Matthew Knowles aren’t the only hands that are dirty in this game. Take a look ad Kirk Franklin’s  “I Smile” video.
This is commercialized Gospel buffoonery at its best. While I loved the I smile message and song, I am appalled by this video. It confirms everything that I am saying today about performers verses ministers. Kirk proved with this video that he is no longer a minister of music in my eyes rather a gospel artist operating in the manufactured Gospel music industry now.

When I pondered on who has stood the test of time and stayed true to their calling of Ministers of Gospel Music, I would have to say that would be Andre and Saundra Crouch.  Even having beat cancer 4 times and his health now not good, Andre and Saundra Crouch are still soilders for the Lord.  Check out a recent video interview conducted by Donnie McClurkin earlier this year where Saundra breaks down and puts everything into perspective for us regarding gospel music: “You don’t sing Gospel Music to Make Money”

My My My, what treasures we have in those two people. Andre is 70+ years old and frail, yet he just released another project entitled the Journey, Please as a tribute to him, support this project, as the days are far and in between when we receive authentic gospel messages such as these wonderful transforming medleys God thru Andre used to bless the souls of millions around the World:

Attn. Mega Church Pastors: “The Jig is UP”

by The Churchlady

Super sized mega churches operate across  America attracting thousands of members, developing  popular television ministries and economic development programs.

Pastors of  Mega churches are charismatic and push dramatic, music-filled ministries that help retain members.  Mega Churches, among other things, are big businesses and their pastor operates as  a CEO as often as a Pastor.  One of the primary jobs of a CEO  is to  build relationships that ensures the organization’s growth. That, perhaps,  is how  Eddie Long  was operating when he developed a relationship with investment salesmen (non Licensed), Ephren Taylor, that  caused ten members of New Birth  to file suit against Bishop Long and the Church.  I am sure this news story is of great interest to Mega Church Pastors and should send a strong signal that  ‘THE JIG is UP!

Why? because the Mega Church Pastors can no longer look to the Church as its primary finance company.  Yes, I said it.  Some pastors have become extremely wealthy individuals using the church as their finance company with no ROI paid back to the church.

Some Mega Church Pastors will argue that they are their own entreprenuer in addition to being a Pastor and they have a seperate business entity outside of the church.  I wonder  how many of those same pastors are willing to be transparent and show their members where their initial financing came to help them build this seperate entity.

How many Pastors would freely admit that their Mega Church financed their television broadcast appearances which  helped them build media exposure that later helped them get  deals with New York publishing houses.

And why would a publishing house take a chance on publishing a pastor’s book of sermons or self help guide, churchlady?

They aren’t taking a chance chile, don’t think for one minute they didn’t do the research on the TV Broadcast to find out how popular that preacher was. Of course they have a safety net, if the book doesn’t sell well in mainstream Amerca,  they can always market it  in the the Mega Church Pastor’s bookstore.

So how does this tie to the church as a finance company?

It was the church chile, not the pastor, who paid for the pastor to be on TV in the first place.  Now traditionally finance companies charge you a premium to borrow their money.  I wonder how many church trustees asked the Pastor for a cut of the money when the Pastor  made the deal with the publisher that used the same sermons preached from their church’s  pulpit and later televised to help build the Pastors influence, all at the expense of the church.

And why, church lady would a Pastor need to gain national media exposure?

Well, if a Pastor has desires to build their own business in addition to being a Pastor,  gaining media exposure is extremly important. You see its all about numbers.  If a Pastor  wanted to become an author the easiest thing to do is publish and distribute sermons. If  they don’t want to self publish,  they  need to gain the attention of a national publishing house.   In order to gain  attention they  have to prove that they as well as their product is marketable.  One of the tools they  could use to present their case would be a tv broadcast viewing audience.

Many simply use the TV Broadcast audience to help them  gain enough influence to become established  in other revenue producing areas of ministry including:  conferences, preaching and speaking engagements.

And speaking of preaching and speaking engagements, lets talk about the preachers chitlin  circuit for a minute . Did you realize the average Mega Church Pastor gets paid $3,000 to preach for 30 minutes in your pulpit.  And, that is not including travel expenses which is always first class airline ticket and lodging in a five star hotel with car service.  Chile, please don’t get me started on the church financing preaching engagement scam!

But, the Jig is Up!  Mega Church Preachers, cause the church, even the mega church, can’t afford to finance the preacher’s circuit anymore.  The economy is forcing everybody,  even the person you stacked on your trustee board to look at how you are doing business today.

So, beware,  the I’ ll give you a $3,000 check from my church this month and you get me a $3,000 check from your church next month won’t be around for much longer  and rightfully so, why in the world should a Preacher be paid $100 per minute.  That’s right  if a church gives you a $3,000 honorarium and you are on the pulpit for 30 minutes, the church just paid you $100 for every minute you were in the pulpit.  That is some expensive financing especially when the finance company won’t ever see the ROI on that kind of deal. Half the time these pastors don’t even give you a fresh sermon for that kind of money.  Now if you are lecturing at University’s or Corporattions by all means charge the big bucks, but not the church.

Mega Church Pastors,  I agree that the church must seek ways to raise funds just like any other non profit organization and that is the reason you have a trustee board or  business administrators.  This is just another example of why the Mega Church MUST  re-examine their current business practices.

“THE JIG IS UP!”

Troy Davis Funeral: The Church Lady’s Take On

by The Churchlady

Troy Davis’ funeral is scheduled to take place on this coming Saturday morning in his hometown of Savannah, GA.  The Church Lady’s take on the funeral is that  many  leaders, activists and entertainers  will gather around the pulpit and make mini sound bite mentions about how devastating this  act of murder was.  As I  watch the the campaign to save Troy’s life  unfold I often  wonder how many of these flamboyant, eloquant speakers  were there for  Troy, his family, Amnesty International, Rev. Raphael Warnock and Rev. Al Sharpton for the past several years when they were struggling to get the support of  their high profile and celebrity likeness to help them bring awareness to Troy Davis’ case.

Where were you when Amnesty asked for more support?  Where were you Big Boi when Troy  really needed your celebrity likeness to bring awarness, afterall,  you are from Savannah?  where were you Andy Young? Were you there for the Rally they had just a few weeks ago at King’s Church.  I am sorry Y’all but this just gets under my skin.  To have everybody showing up two decades too late is just not good enough!!!

My take on this Johnny come lately help is:  “Put your money  and your time where your mouth is” or  shut up, pay your respects and go home on Saturday!

I wonder how many of you will be with Dr. Warnock and Rev. Al Sharpton next week, next year, or the next decade,  if that’s what it takes to turn this unfair justice system around.

How many of you will stand with them?  How many of you will donate the hundreds of thousands of dollars needed by the NAACP and Amnesty International to expose this travesty to the world and make sure that it never forgets it?  How many of you will allow yourselves to finght and remember:

I am Troy Davis, and I am Free!

By Melanie Eversley, USA TODAY

NAACP president Benjamin Jealous and Amnesty International USA executive director Larry Cox will speak and Rev. Raphael Warnock, spiritual advisor to the Davis family and head of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, the church of Martin Luther King Jr., will deliver the eulogy.

Davis, 42, was convicted in 1991 of the 1989 shooting death of Savannah police officer Mark Allen MacPhail, who died while coming to the aid of a homeless man being attacked in a Burger King parking lot. Since Davis’ conviction, several witnesses have signed affidavits recanting their testimony, saying the police coerced them into implicating Davis. Several more have signed affidavits implicating another man in the crime. MacPhail’s family has said they trust the outcome of the initial trial and complained that as Davis’ appeals dragged out through the years, they had to relive the loss of their loved one, a husband and father.

Jealous and Warnock said they expect that Saturday’s service, slated for 11 a.m. ET at Jonesville Baptist Church, will not only serve as a remembrance for Davis, but also as a forum for activists opposed to the death penalty. Davis died by lethal injection on Sept. 21 at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison in Jackson, Ga.

“Troy, one of the things that he asked all of us to do was to keep on fighting,” said Jealous, who befriended Davis and his family over the years and who maintained there was too much reasonable doubt in the case to move forward with Davis’ execution. “He said, ‘This movement started before I was born and it must grow stronger, no matter what happens.”

Raphael Warnock, pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church, and Benjamin Jealous, NAACP president,  walk arm-in-arm leading marchers through downtown Atlanta in support of Georgia death row inmate Troy Davis on Sept. 16.
By David Tulis, AP

“We have been engaged throughout this process, not only in saving Troy Davis’ life, but in addressing the issue of the death penalty in America’s criminal justice system,” Warnock said. “We are one of the few nations who still do this.”

Warnock’s church took up a collection last weekend to help the Davis family pay for the funeral. He did not say how much was collected. “I don’t know the details of their financial situation but I know Troy Davis was in prison 22 years,” Warnock said. “I suspect he did not have life insurance, is my guess … and many were surprised to discover that after the state executes you they turn you over to your family to be buried, so we are his extended family and we thought we should help.”

Warnock said that once word got out that Ebenezer had taken a collection for the family, he began receiving emails from people around the country wanting to know how they could donate.

Other efforts have cropped up in support of those who felt there was too much reasonable doubt in the Davis case to warrant execution.

Amnesty International is calling for Saturday to be a “Day of Remembrance” for Davis, and is asking people to either wear T-shirts reading “I Am Troy Davis” or black armbands reading “Not in my name,” or to change their Facebook profile picture to the “I Am Troy Davis” image circulated by Amnesty International on its website.

A march in Washington scheduled for Oct. 15 and organized by Sharpton’s National Action Network will focus chiefly on jobs, but also on the Troy Davis case, Martin Luther King III said during an interview at the annual Congressional Black Caucus meeting in Washington last weekend.

Along with the well knowns who will speak at the funeral, several others who will not be there have agreed to serve as honorary pallbearers, including hip-hop label owner Russell Simmons, model and author Kimora Lee Simmons, rapper Big Boi, Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., and activist Dick Gregory.

Churchlady’s take on: Bishop Eddie Long Updates

by The Churchlady

For the past few weeks there have been several new Eddie Long updates reported on the blogosphere.  Let’s start with Jamal Parris and Spencer LaGrande granting a local Georgia TV station  exclusive interviews where they revealed that they would write a tell all book revealing the details of their relationship with Bishop Long.  All at the risk of  losing their settlement.

The Church Lady’s take on Jamal Parris and Spencer LaGrande:

Ok, my take on this situation is this, while I believe that these two men definitely have some unresolved issues that need to be addressed regarding an inappropriate relationship with Bishop Eddie Long, I also believe that they are trying to be paid, period!  These two young men are not acting as if they are victims, they are acting like they want a larger pay check and are willing to exploit their experiences with Eddie Long to help them achieve their goal.

If you view the Channel 2  interviews, you will note that they were very careful not to use Bishop Long’s name, yet, promoted the notion of the soon to be released book several times. My take is that they are  no longer acting like a victims, yet, more like  a couple of  opportunists.  I think these young men should seek counseling and not the lime light at his point in their lives.

I am in no way taking sides, but I am keeping it real, you tried the case in a court of public opinion using the media to break the news then   agreed to a settlement with Bishop Long, instead of speaking out publicly from the beginning.  Now all of a sudden, you are foregoing your settlement with Bishop Long to write a book?  Sounds like you got a better offer to me.

Also,  it is mighty funny that these two men came out with this new book development only after Centino Kemp received his new-found stardom on an exclusive fox 5 interview.  I am just saying….

The Church Lady’s Take on Centino Kemp Tweet Update:

Speaking of Centino Kemp, let me address his little tweet tyriad.  First of all  when Fox 5 first approached Centino,  he was  caught on tape literally running away from the reporter who first asked to speak to him about Eddie Long, then all of a sudden in the same interview, they were interviewing  him dressed in the same clothes he was running away from the cameras on!  Watching that interview appeared to me to be something like  a staged reality show segment. (sorry fox 5 just keeping it real)

Then Centino went away for a minute until news broke about  Jamal and Spencer writing a book.   Low and behold, here Centino poped up again with this tweet marathon against Bishop Long.

My Take on Centino:  First seek counseling Centino and maybe you will begin to heal, then get some vocal training if you really want to be a singer.

The Church Lady’s Take on Eddie Long and his statement: Stand Up and Step Aside!

My take on Eddie Long on posting then taking down his statement is this, Stand Up, Bishop Long and step aside from your ministry until you can get it together! For whatever reason, these young men are coming after you and they are coming hard.  If for no other reason, consider the feelings of your immediate and church family. This situation is just not about you, Bishop Long, it is also about your families.   It is almost impossible for your family and New Birth Missionary Baptist Church to move forward when you are constantly in the news. You have them taking 2 steps forward and 10 steps back.

Question, If an associate minister on your staff were in the same situation what would you have them do, Bishop Long?

Stand Up and step aside until you can get it togehter.

After all, Bishop Long, you do have 5 stones and you haven’t thrown one yet.

The Church Lady’s Take on: Alledged Overdose of Zachery Tims

by The Churchlady

Like so many Saints I was very sad to hear that Pastor Zachery Tims died suddenly last week of an alleged overdose. Pastor Tims was one of the few ministers that I made sure to watch on the Word Network. Pastor Tims had such a special way of teaching   from the bible and showing how to apply the scriptures  into every day life. Pastor Tim just had the gift to “Make it Plain” and I gave him the highest praise on my top ten preacher list.

When I heard the news that Pastor Tims had died, I immediately thought, what happened, how could a young man at 42 with no apparent ailments just fall dead. I began to pray for his children and former wife and I began to question God’s reasoning. I know we are not supposed to question God, but let’s be real, we question God every day.

Then later in the day the news reports about a white powdery substance was found on/near  his person and that a toxicology report was being done to rule out an overdose began circulating. Immediately I said to my self, “Self, I can’t take another preacher scandal right now.”

And then self said to me, why, don’t you want to know the truth?”

Three days later, I still had not answered self’s question. I think because deep down inside I probably didn’t want to know truth. Yet today, I said to self, “Yes I want to know the truth.” I am sick and tired of being bamboozled. I want God to do whatever God has to do to clean up His Kingdom, even if it means loosing some soilders like Pastor Tims, who I admired.

Yes, I want to know the truth, I want God to remove false prophets from the pulpits by any means necessary. I know it seems harsh but I believe that God thru Zachery Tims and all the other preacher scandals that are cropping up, is trying to tell us something. I believe that God, thru Zachery Tims, is showing us to and praise HIM and not man. He is showing us that we are treating these preachers as if they are Gods.

And, I believe that every now and then, God  has to remind us that He, our God is a jealous God!

I did not want to believe that Pastor Zachery Tims had Not been miraculously saved and that everything he wrote in his memoir could be false. I wanted to hold onto the fact that he had been cleaned of his sins. I wanted to hold onto the fact that even though he stumbled in life, he got up and he kept it moving. When I learned of the White powdery substance laying near him on the floor. I was still trying to hold on. I said to self, “Self it was near him, that doesn’t mean he ingested it” And self said back to me. ” Chile please!”

The reality though is that on last Friday, Pastor Zachery Tims, for whatever reason, was NOT living a miraculously saved life. I don’t know nor care if the toxicology reports are in yet. Pastor Tims should not have ever had any type of white powdery substance anywhere near his person.

My take on the alleged drug overdose of Pastor Zachery Tims is this: From this day forward Don’t praise the Man of God, Praise God!

I don’t know the struggles that Pastor Zachery Tims had to deal with on a daily basis, I do know that he loved the Lord with all his heart and he attempted to love the people of God in the best way he knew how and that he blessed my soul on more than one occasion and I pray that his soul is at rest now.

RIP Pastor Zachery Tims

If God Wants Me to Be Happy, Why Do I Have So Much Suffering?

by The Churchlady

Chronic illness, difficult marriages, losing a child-doesn’t God want us to be happy? If so, why so much suffering?

By John Piper

God definitely wants you to be happy long-term and infinitely, and deeply now in and through those circumstances.

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, will he not with him freely give us all things? (Romans 8:31-32)

That’s saying that since God paid the infinite price of his Son for you, will he not then surely carry through in providing everything you need?

And then it goes on to say, “What shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness”-I mean, these are hard things!-”or peril, or sword? As it is written, ‘We are being killed all day long’” (8:35-36).

So you’ve got persecution and murder of Christians. And then he says, “No. In”-In-”all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.”

What I think “more than conquerors” means for your happiness is that a conqueror has his enemies lying subdued at his feet. You’ve got distress, famine, nakedness, peril, sword, persecution, and there they are, conquered at my feet. More than conquerors means they’re not just at my feet. They are serving me. They’re not just in chains in prison. They are serving me. My persecution, my famine, my nakedness, my loss-as painful and as tearful as they are-are my servants. God works them all together for my good.

Now that good that he works in and through them is the foundation of my happiness. It isn’t the circumstance. There’s plenty of tears. Jesus was “a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.” Paul says, “Sorrowful yet always rejoicing.”

I think Paul was always crying and always happy. How could he not be crying? He was so beat up. His back must’ve looked like a hunk of jelly most of the time because he had these five-times-thirty-nine lashes beat over his back and then healed in all kinds of gnarly ways. So this man lived with a thorn in his flesh, probably in his back, in his eyes, in his mind. And he had enemies all around him. And he said, “Rejoice in the Lord, and again I say rejoice!”

So yes, God wants you happy. But he doesn’t do it with circumstance. He does it with himself. He does it with the gospel. And he does it in and through circumstances.

This is a call for faith-huge faith-that God is good, God is for us, and God is using all these things for our deep happiness now and our perfect, unsullied happiness forever in the age to come.

Does God Want us to be Poor?

by The Churchlady

thechurchladyblogs.com

As I was researching information on an upcoming article I will be blogging about televangelist lifestyles, I came across a very interesting article describing the Prosperity Doctrine and the question of whether God wants us to be Poor.  I encourage you to read the entire article as it is intriguing, it helped me to understand some of the teachings of Creflo Dollar, T.D. Jakes, Paula White, Joel Olsteen and Kenneth Copeland, more on them later:

Does God Want Us To Be Poor?
This is in no way to subscribe to the theory that God wants his people to be poor and needy. God is not opposed to wealth and the Bible never once condemns those that have money, just because they have money. In fact some of God’s finest… Abraham, David and Job for example, were men of substance. Although he eventually fell rather badly from early on King Solomon was wealthy by any standard.

The problem arises because of our tendency to equate success with wealth. Because we want to see ourselves as successful, we want to be wealthy. However, God does not does not define success in monetary terms. It is possible to be rich and be a failure, or to be poor but yet counted a success in God’s kingdom. Our financial standing has no relationship to our standing with God.

Besides which we have to pay very careful attention to answer to the question of why God warns against wanting to be wealthy and focusing on the material in this world. ?

What could possibly be wrong with wanting to be prosperous?

The Link Between Love and Desire
Even the tele-evangelists themselves, pretending that there is no kinship between desiring money and loving money, point to 1 Timothy 6:10 that says it is the love of money that is the root of all evil. But, as usual, the preceding verse has been glossed over. It says [Emphasis Added]

But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction (1 Timothy 6:9).

The author of the book of Hebrews himself correlates love of money with wanting more than you already have.

Be ye free from the love of money; content with such things as ye have: for himself hath said, I will in no wise fail thee, neither will I in any wise forsake thee. [Hebrews 13:5]

So, according to the proponents of the prosperity doctrine, God’s wants me to prosper materially in this lifetime, In order to do so I have to see myself “rising to new levels”. I have to take the time to learn the techniques that will cause God to ‘increase me financially’. I have to see my dreams coming to pass. In other words I must have the desire to obtain more than I have now.

So why then does God warn that this desire is likely to plunge me into ruin and destruction?

Front and Center Stage
The answer is simple. As the Word says.. the “deceitfulness of wealth” can choke out the Word of God..

“Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful.” (Mark 4:18-19) does telling

Has anyone noticed that, from cover to cover, the entire Bible, revolves around the theme of sin and salvation. It is the thread that around which the entire fabric of the Bible is woven… the one subject that under-girds virtually every one of the sixty-six books of the Bible.

Yet, when prosperity teachers ascend their stages, there is a distinct lack of preaching on the Bible’s Raison d’être … Sin, The Wrath of God, and His judgment, Repentance and Salvation. None of which appeals to the modern generation who prefer to have their ears tickled rather than put up with sound doctrine, even though their very lives depend on it.

What was that again about the “deceitfulness of wealth” choking out the Word of God? What was that again about those who want to get rich fall into traps and being plunged into ruin and destruction?

Since so many Christians love the messages of Being all you can be, Achieving all you can achieve, and Getting all you can get that pander to self, is it any wonder that these churches, along with those that preach to ‘felt needs”, have so many followers and grow like weeds? While we might mourn the fact that so many have fallen into the snare set by the wolves in the church, we cannot deny that we were warned that this would happen.

For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. [2 Timothy 4:3]

Mega Churches & Bishops: Is History Repeating Itself?

by The Churchlady

African American Baptist Church, Silver Hill Plantation, Georgetown County, South Carolina

One would think that the Mega Church Saga was groundbreaking and new. As the fashion industry teaches us, new trends can many times be connected to that of yesterday! This article will reveal the strking resemblence of the History of the Black Church and Pastors vs. today’s Mega Churches and as one would now call Bishops.

The History of the Black Church  dates back to the last part of the 1700s. Only a few significant denominations existed for blacks prior to the Civil War largley due to the fact that congregations existed as part of a standard denomination that met seperately. Through research, it appears that black church folk have been fighting amongst themselves since the black church existence in the 1700′s.

The African Methodist Episcopal Church, for example, grew out of the segregated ST. George Methodist Church in Philadelphia in 1793. Richard Allen led the withdrawn group to form themselves as a separate Methodist denomination the same year. In New York, members withdrew from the Johnstown Methodist Church to form the Zion Church in 1801. In 1821 blacks formed the African Methodist Episcopal Church.

Worship:

While the North allowed Blacks to worship seperately, the South was not trying to hear any of that. In the South, whites usually refused to allow blacks to meet separately. In some areas blacks couldn’t even assemble for worship. In areas where blacks did worship, they worshiped with whites. Many times churches in the South would build a balcony and blacks climbed a ladder to access it from outside.

Black churches expressed themselves emotionally and fervently and black theology tended to be simple but was preached hot and straight. The preachers emphasized sin and salvation by grace and used a dramatic style with tremendous use of a “sing song” delivery. (known today as the “hoop”)

Thru the years black churches faced some serious shortcomings. William Warren Sweet, a historian of the 1930s, said that there was more amusement than worship in black churches. He also noted lax moral conduct existing in black churches of the period. Furthermore, he argued, black churches often became political stepping-stones for aspiring black leadership. Some of the best known contemporary black leaders of all political persuasions thrust themselves into the limelight after ministries: Jesse Jackson, Adam Clayton Powell and Martin Luther King Jr. to name three. These three, in particular, represented liberal and social thinking rather than conservative and evangelical.

Black churches offered hotbeds of cultism as well. it is reported that some of this resulted from the movement of blacks to urban centers. Like whites, they too found themselves far removed from their rural roots. Ira Reid, writing in 1927, gave an analysis of black cult leaders of his day in his book, Let us Prey. In recent history, other black cult leaders emerged: Father Divine, who referred to himself as “God incarnate”; Sweet Daddy Grace, who once said he was mightier than God. Grace maintained that if you sinned against God, grace can forgive you; but if you sin against Grace, God can’t forgive you! Reverend Ike, who graduated from Manhattan Christian College, represents an early form of the “health and wealth” gospel. Ike maintained God wants his people rich! His lifestyle demonstrated it, too. Another cult leader is, believe it or not, Brother Leroy Jenkins of Ohio who formed The Church of What’s Happening Now. Comedian Flip Wilson often parodied Jenkins in a skit.

The growth of the Black Church

Most black denominations began after the Civil War. By 1860, about 11%, or 500,000, of America’s 4,400,000 blacks belonged to churches.

Most American blacks joined some sort of Baptist church. Black Baptists, however, worshiped with their white brethren for many years before forming their own congregations. Virginia blacks established a separate black Baptist church by 1867. This group became the National Baptist Convention in the U.S.A., Inc. Black conventions began multiplying rapidly after that. Americans soon hear of the National Baptist Convention, a Progressive National Baptist Convention and the National Primitive Baptist Convention of the U.S.A. It seems Baptists are always Baptists. All black Baptist organizations contain about 90% of American blacks claiming Christianity.

A missionary named William Colley, an African-American appointed to serve in West Africa by the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention in 1875, issued a call for black Baptists to meet in Montgomery, Ala., for the purpose of organizing a national convention to do extensive missionary work.

Along with foreign missions, home missions and education, one of the early goals was for black Baptists to publish literature written by their own ministers. The American Baptist Publishing House refused in 1890 to publish writings of black ministers because of resistance from Southern clients. The National Baptist Publication Board came into existence in 1896 and opened a publishing house in Nashville, Tenn. The convention suffered its first major rift in 1897, when the Lott Carey Foreign Mission Convention broke away over differences about mission strategy and working more closely with whites.

A dispute over ownership and operation of the National Baptist Publishing House prompted a second split in 1915, with formation of the National Baptist Convention of America.

During the Civil Rights Movement, younger ministers including Martin Luther King, Jr., pushed the National Baptist Convention to take a more proactive position for social justice. The older generation preferred the more gradual approach to civil-rights advances. That prompted a third major split, formation of the Progressive National Baptist Convention, in 1961.

The PNBC has followed a path of political activism, supporting groups such as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and methods such as affirmative action. Famous civil rights leaders who were members of the PNBC include Dr. Martin Luther King, Benjamin Mays, Ralph David Abernathy, Wyatt Tee Walker, and Gardner C. Taylor. The Convention bills the progressive concept as “fellowship, progress, and peace.”

Many black religious leaders focused on social issues. For many years the Southern Christian Leadership Conference led the struggle for black civil rights and social change. Their “Christian” work focused more on a political agenda than evangelism and the biblical Gospel. Of course the 1950s and 1960s saw much social unrest because of civil rights legislation and the effort to end segregation. During that period many blacks concluded the white Christian community was unredeemable. Malcolm X and other black protest leaders abandoned Christianity for Islam thinking it better suited to meeting their social goals.

Today:  The Church Lady’s Take on the Black Church

A lot has changed in the black church with regard to climbing a ladder to reach the balcony of a church, We’ve come a long way baby.  Not only do we  have “mega churches”, elaborately laid out on several acres of land where we can freely enter, choose theatre style seats equipped with large screens to view the pastor, panoramic style! and many mega churches now have mini-churches  like McDonald’s theres one in or coming to your neighborhood!

What hasn’t changed is that church folk are still fighting and walking away to start their own churches, which could answer the question of  why we see a city church on every street corner in major metropolitan areas. I will say that we  are doing a better job of  justifying our actions for splitting churches now,  we are more politically correct and saying  ”The Lord spoke to my heart and told me to move” or “The Lord is directing me to plant a church.” Instead of having knock down drag out fights and going to court (well I take that back, we still  taking the church or the pastor to court every five minutes)

The worship style, however in the black church basically remains the same, the preacher is still very charismatic, the music is often playing alongside him as he comes to the “celebration” portion of his three-point sermon and the ”WORD”  is often times simple and basic. And, yes, Creflo, Eddie Long and other prosperity preachers aren’t doing a new thing, as research has shown, they just following in the foot steps of Daddy Grace, Rev. Ike and others who came before them.

There are two areas in the history of the Black Church that is not evolving or even remaining relevant:  Black Church leadership from the pulpit  and church denomination leadership.

Church denominations are becoming defunct as membership declines, in fact, we Baptist don’t even go to annual convention anymore,  instead we go to TD Jakes Conferences. Seriously, I can’t blame a Saint,  who would want to go to the National Baptist Convention when  Henry Lyons former president of The National Baptist Convention was plagued by scandal in 1997 when he was caught with a mistress and served nearly five years in prison after his conviction on state racketeering and grand-theft charges and pleading guilty to federal tax-evasion charges in 1999. Then, in September, 2009,  attempted to regain his reign as president of the convention only to be defeated over whelmingly by Alabama Pastor, Julius Scruggs. Really, Henry, REALLY, you need to go somewhere and sit down!

And somebody please tell a Church Lady, how in the world did we go from such great leaders as Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X, to Rev. Al Sharpton?  I love you Mr. President and will lose my religion if somebody talks about you to my face,  but, there are greater minds to bring to the table along with Rev. Al Sharpton.

No offense Rev. Al, love you dearly.

And that’s all I have to say on that!

This concludes The Church Lady’s Take on The History of the Black Church,  thank you for following  this timeline with me. Your comments are welcomed and appreciated. Until next time,

Be Blessed Chile!

Video: Atlanta Pastor, Donald Brown, Ask Eddie Long Members to Sit Him Down!

by The Churchlady

During the 11am 6/12/11 service, Pastor Donald E. Battle of Divine Faith Ministeries International in Metro Atlanlta, GA says Eddie Long members need to demand that he sit down. Battle a one-time mentee of Creflo Dollar also said at his 8am service on 6/12/11 that Creflo was WRONG for trying to defend Eddie Long and that Creflo did NOT need to jump into that fire for Eddie Long……even TD Jakes didn’t jump to Eddie Long’s defense like that!

Watch:

Rev. Battle is the 2nd pastor to even address the issue of the Eddie Long scandal. I admire him as I do Creflo for addressing and speaking on this “ask don’t tell” subject matter in the Black Church. I also liked how Rev. Battle welcomed Newbirth Missionary Baptist Church members to come worship ad Divine Faith ministries even providing them directions on how to get there!

The Church Lady’s Take on Creflo Dollar’s message to New Birth Members regarding Bishop Eddie Long

by The Churchlady

churchladyblogs

Creflo Dollar’s remarks about support of Bishop Eddie Long and lecturing alleged members of New birth to go back has furthered supported some christians belief that many mega church preachers are simply narcissistic opportunists filled with self adoration and dangerous pride.

I know those words seem a little harsh, however, when you watch a video tape of a Shepherd who leads a flock of more than 20,000 Christians and hosts thousands of visiting Christians per week, take the time during a Sunday Morning Worship Service to say this:

“When you have a wreck, you expect God to forgive you and everybody else. Don’t let the preacher have a wreck now. Then you become self-righteous and judgmental, and you gon’ leave him for his wreck when you done had more wrecks.”

Dollar further added that Long was still “anointed to do what he was called to do” and began berating New Birth members, saying, “I just can’t believe that people would leave their preacher ’cause he had a wreck, instead of praying for him.” He also claimed that Long “had insurance, and Jesus paid the premium.” Oh really, Creflo Dollar, really!

While I admire Creflo Dollar for standing by “His Friend,” Creflo Dollar gave total disregard to the sheep who came to THE LORDS house. I really don’t think that God gave Creflo Dollar, the authority over those visitors to push them away.

Question to Creflo, ” Is that something you think Jesus Would do?”

And please, let us not forget that this sad situation is not just about Eddie Long, this is also about a flock of God’s people who are also, “paying for it”, spiritually, physically and more than likely, financially.

Thousands of people are trying to deal with how this one indiscretion has caused (in Bishop’s Dollar’s words,) “a wreck” in their personal lives.

Me and, clearly thousands of other saints out here, are enraged about your arrogant, non pastoral demeanor from the pulpit and total disregard of the disciples of Christ who for whatever reason felt the desire and need to go to World Changers to be fed and instead were made to feel unwelcome, berated and basically told to go back to where they came from.

I can just imagine how those people felt, I am sure many will not want to step foot in anybody’s church again.

Excuse me but our jobs as ministers of the gospel is to bring folk to Christ not turn them away because “you worried about them turning on you or you trying to help your friend!”

My Take on this on this hot topic of the week is ” Stand UP Men and Women of God” Stand Up! I am so proud of Roland Martin, Sherri Shepherd and I admire Creflo Dollar, too, for standing up for his friend. but, to berate the people of God for coming into HIS House was inappropriate to say the least. Creflo Dollar crossed the line in my eyes and made this a Creflo message and not the Lord’s message.

Get mad with me if you want, Preachers, World Changers members and others who I am sure will load the comments section with negative comments. I’ll do my best to respond!

Yall all know how the Church Lady Rolls, it’s all about keeping it Real.

Until next week,
Be Blessed Chile!
