by The Churchlady

LAS VEGAS — Along with gold records and number one songs, the secular music world can be synonymous with addiction.

R&B superstar Chaka Khan even called the industry “demonic” following the tragic death of her friend and fellow music icon, Whitney Houston.

“This machine around us, this so called music industry is such a demonic thing,” Khan told CNN’s Piers Morgan shortly after Houston’s death. “It sacrifices people’s lives.”

Gospel music legend Helen Baylor once sang backup for Chaka Khan. Baylor recently spoke with CBN News for an extended interview in Las Vegas at Xartis Studios, a new facility that shows young people how to use music to cope with mental and emotional challenges.

“When [Chaka] said that, I sat there in my bed and just said, somebody gets it,” Baylor said. “Somebody else gets it … there is a demonic component in the industry, fueled by greed, money.”

“People have no regard for anybody else, except for the bottom line, the money,” she said.

Baylor’s Broken Road

Baylor took on the demons of the secular music world and drug addiction in the early days of her career as a secular music performer. She shared the intimate details of her troubles, trials, and triumphs in her memoir, No Greater Love: The Helen Baylor Story.

Baylor is also at work with producers to turn that memoir into a feature film.

“My life has been something from the beginning,” Baylor said. “I don’t complain. I am not angry.”

Helen Baylor talks more about her testimony of deliverance from prescription drug addiction.

McDonald’s Gospelfest: RECAP

by The Churchlady

It appears that the McDonald’s Gospelfest was another hit.  Please find the NJ.com recap below:

By Tris McCall/The Star-Ledger

Host and director A. Curtis Farrow wouldn’t ask for a moment of silence.

“I’m a church boy,” said Farrow, “and we believe in making noise.”

As images of the Whitney Houston appeared on the Prudential Center video screens tonight, the capacity crowd at the McDonald’s Gospelfest did just that.

It was an opportunity to say another loud, long goodbye to Houston, who always considered gospel the bedrock of her sound. Nobody at McDonald’s Gospelfest, the annual celebration of devotional music that has become a spring tradition in Newark, needed to be reminded of Houston’s deep gospel roots or her local ties. But it was still gratifying to hear her sing “This Day,” one of her most powerful spiritual recordings.

Then, in tribute, Gary Houston, Whitney’s brother and a singer in his own right, led the New Hope Mass Choir in a rendition of “Let The Church Say Amen.”

A poised but plainly emotional Cissy Houston — Whitney’s mother, and a legendary church singer — had already moved the crowd with an aching rendition of the gospel standard “Deep River.” Accompanied by a small choir, Houston floated from high note to high note as if lost in a reverie. Like so many of the songs aired at Gospelfest, hers was one of perseverance through an ordeal, and a prayer for deliverance from strife. Afterward, she thanked her listeners for their cards and well-wishes. She did not mention her daughter by name, and she did not participate in the tribute.

The devout Donnie McClurkin, spunky Mary Mary, joyful Fred Hammond, wisecracking Vickie Winans, and First Lady of Gospel Shirley Caesar all raised their voices to the rafters at this year’s Gospelfest. Comedian Steve Harvey, riding high on the success of his latest movie, spent his set poking fun at Christian piety.

But it was that celebration of the life of the late Whitney Houston, who died this February, that drew the most national attention to the Newark event. For a brief, flickering moment, the spirit of New Hope Baptist Church descended on the Prudential Center. It was at New Hope — the storied church on Sussex Avenue in Central Newark — where Whitney Houston first sang in public, and it was at New Hope where Cissy Houston became the minister of music. The world visited New Hope for Whitney Houston’s funeral, catching a glimpse of the sort of righteous fire so characteristic of the church’s services.

The Houston tribute followed the three-hour afternoon talent show and competition that is, for many attendees, the heart and soul of Gospelfest. Thousands of singers and rappers from all over the nation (but mostly from New Jersey and New York) had auditioned for a chance to offer praise on the Prudential Center stage. So many applied for a slot in the talent competition this year that categories had to be reinstated. Those few who were chosen shot the works, proving again how much vocal talent is tucked away in neighborhood congregations and regional choirs.

The competitors aired plenty of traditional church music — a fiery, uptempo version of “Amazing Grace” brought down the house — but also sang gospel-influenced pop songs by artists like Sam Cooke and Adele. The more emotionally effulgent and animated the performer, the more the crowd roared; Gospelfest is no place for artistic understatement. The teen solo competitors, carried away by their passion for the spirit, broke into a frantic impromptu dance. The members of the Joy Unlimited Youth Choir from Philadelphia literally ended up on the floor of the stage during their performance.

This was the 29th annual Gospelfest and the fifth in a row to be held at the Prudential Center. Prior versions of the festival featured appearances by Dionne Warwick, Hezekiah Walker, Kirk Franklin and other gospel stars. Mayor Cory Booker, who made a brief appearance before the main sets, delivered a prayer of his own, calling Gospelfest a signature event in Newark.

James and Cheryl Fortune Talk “Relationship”

by The Churchlady
"James and Cheryl Fortune graces Gospel Today Cover"

thechurchladyblogs.com

Nashville, TN (May 2, 2012) – Multiple award winning, Grammy nominated recording artist, James Fortune & wife Cheryl talk about relationships in the cover story of the new issue of Gospel Today magazine. The May/June Issue features the Fortunes in the summer ‘Love’ issue along with five other prominent ‘it’ couples.

In the cover story, James & Cheryl share their powerful love story of survival and strength. As portraits of courage James & Cheryl recall the most difficult time in their marriage -the season of being homeless. The couple relives how they stuck by each other and leaned on their unwavering faith to survive despite an over 7 month stretch of being jobless, living in their car and subsequently moving from motel to motel.

“It was a difficult time because it affected our entire family” said James. “To realize that I was having a hard time providing for my kids, in the midst of this family struggle proved a difficult, dark time in my life.”

The Fortunes didn’t allow their lives to be defined by that narrative and have thrived since that trying time. The Fortune’s have enjoyed a burgeoning career along with successfully launching their own record imprint F.I.Y.A World Music in conjunction with Light Records, under which Cheryl’s solo album will be released next year.

James’ current CD IDENTITY quickly debuted at number #1 on Billboard’s Top Gospel chart when it was released earlier this year and continues to remain in the Top 5. Further, the first single, “Still Able,” continues to be one of the most played gospel songs at radio as Fortune by way of his dynamic performance and delivery has become a beloved pillar and treasure within the genre.

2005 saw the explosive release of James Fortune and F.I.Y.A’s debut album YOU SURVIVED. The title song, “You Survived” peaked at #2 on the R&B Gospel singles chart. He amassed worldwide recognition in 2009, with the award winning song, “I Trust You,” off his sophomore release THE TRANSFORMATION. “I Trust You,” held the number one slot on the Gospel National Airplay chart for over 30 weeks, making history by becoming the longest running #1 single of any genre. James’ meteoric rise continued with the subsequent success in 2010 of “I Believe,” which earned him his second ASCAP Writer’s Award in 2011. “I Believe” also received a 2011 Soul Train nomination for “Best Gospel Performance” along with three Stellar Award nominations for “Contemporary CD of the Year,” “Contemporary Male Vocalist of the Year” and “Group/Duo of the Year.”

The May/June Issue of Gospel Today hits newsstands next week and will also be available online at www.mygospeltoday.com.

Leandria Johnson: Pregnant, Where is the Daddy?

by The Churchlady

"Leandria Johnson"

Sunday’s Best Season 4 winner, Leandria Johnson, 29  a single mother of three is pregnant .  Now I must say that I am surprised that Ms. Johnson  did not know to take extra precautious measures being a single mom of three  and a proclaimed gospel singing Christian.  Come on now,  let’s keep it Real y’all.

I guess you can tell that The Church Lady is just a tad disappointed. Well at least I am not like  99% of church folk who say all the right things while they are in your face,  then as soon as you are no where in sight, they get busy  with the church chat,  talking behind your back. Chile Pleeze!

Leandria, the CLB Family loves you and want the best for you and yours, but I am going to tell you straight up, I am going to be praying that you will  decide to go on some type of permanent birth control after this one or at least find a husband.

As it strange to me that you announce the baby coming in September, but made no mention of the Baby Daddy.

 By Mona Austin|Eurweb

In the statement (that follows in its entirety) the mommy-to-be acknowledges she needs prayerful support while carrying baby number four and managing the demands of a new career and motherhood:

“In recent weeks, there have been numerous published reports stating that I am pregnant. I would like to take this time to confirm that I am pregnant and due in September. I have been feeling well and maintaining a healthy appetite. I have been busy traveling around the country with my music ministry. One can only imagine that as a mother and mother-to-be, my plate is quite full—taking the kids to school, doing homework, cooking—regular mother duties. I have been blessed to have the love and support of my church, family, friends, label, management, and fans. I have received so many beautiful and thoughtful notes and prayers from people all over the country. I ask that you continue to pray for me and my family. I cannot do this alone. I will continue to pray for God’s guidance and protection over my life. I love you all very much and I will be in touch soon.”   –  Le’Andria Johnson

Johnson shows no signs of slowing down with dates already booked in May.  Since signing with Music World Gospel she has kept a whirlwind calendar, ambitiously releasing 3 projects in less than 6 months.   She continues to stun audiences with the soulful delivery of the single “Jesus,” a ballad from her debut album, “The Awakening of Leandria Johnson”  that is directed at judgmental Christians.  (Johnson won the “Best Gospel Performance”  Grammy for “Jesus” in February.) BET’s Celebration of Gospel: Too Secular for Me this Year! (video)

by The Churchlady

"Jpjnny Gill"

I was extremely disappointed in BET;s Celebration of Gospel Show this year.  It appears to  me to be more and more secular and less spirit filled.  I thought the performance by most of the acts were just that performances and I wanted to snatch Johnny Gill off the stage,  Johnny Gill,  Chile Please. Kelly Price, however gave a wonderful tribute to Whitney houston (42 mark on video)

Watch the full show for yourself and you tell me if  you feel the same way.

Exclusive Interview with Vickie Winans on McDonald’s Gospel Fest and Upcoming Projects

by The Churchlady

I had the best conversation with one of my favorite contemporary gospel artist, Vickie Winans.  Not only is this woman of God a  an award-winning gospel recording artist, but she’s revered as a consummate business woman that heads up Viviane, Inc. where she manages herself and books hundreds of shows per year. She is also the President of her own record label, Destiny Joy Records. A producer, director, songwriter, actress and comedienne as well, Winans does everything in excellence. Chile please!  if you don’t know already, Ms. Vickie Winans is the REAL DEAL!  And, she lets you know every day in her incredibly intriguing and funny tweets!

Vickie Winans gave me  the 411 on her latest projects which include:

Being the  latest Ambassador for McDonald’s Newtrition (nutrition) program. This health conscious program  promotes being more nutritional through various  McDonald’s menu items such as the real fruit smoothies, salads, fruit, etc.

Shooting a movie: Amazing Grace. That’s right Vickie is gearing up to shoot the dramedy (drama and comedy) Amazing Grace in August. You know we got the scoop and this rollercoaster ride features a young lady named Grace who is a Kleptomaniac that went to jail and follows her through the ups and downs of getting it back together.

Two stand up comedy DVD’s. Vickie Winans Hilarious & Unplugged.

"vickie Winans Hillarious and Unplugged"

40 city comedy tour

The newly minted comedienne  will be going on a 40 city comedy tour  in 4 weeks riding in style in a Mercedes Benz bus. The bus will pick up homeless people in each city and take them to the comedy shows.

We love Vickie Winans hilarious antics on the Church lady blogs and we had to ask our girl was she just born this funny or was it developed?

Through chuckles she stated:

She was born crazy lol but the comedy developed through her singing on stage and thus combining singing and comedy/

Chile, just reading the above list makes me tired but  not Vickie Winans,  she  will also  partake in the 29th Anniversary for McDonald’s  Gospelfest  that takes place on May 12, 2012 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.  You know I could not wait to get a jump on what is planned for the  biggest gospel event ever! Vickie shared the following with the Church Lady.

She  has been a part of the Gospelfest for 7 years straight and is delighted to share the stage this year with Gospel Heavy hitters.

  • Donnie McClurkin
  • Fred Hammond
  • Mary Mary
  • Shirley Caesar
  • Steve Harvey
  • Cissy Houston

This year’s theme for Gospelfest is Honor Thy Mother which is fitting for the Mother’s Day weekend celebration. Over the course of 29 years the Gospelfest supported by the McDonald’s corporation and the McDonald’s Tri State Owner/Operator Association has awarded  millions of dollars in scholarships.

The family oriented Gospel competition is a fundraiser for these scholarships from 4-7 pm which the Gospel stars closing out the evening.

When I asked what is Vickie’s favorite part of the Gospelfest experience she proclaimed:

“My favorite part is definitely watching the audience. The 18,000 people in the audience literally  MAKES you sing because  they are so energetic.  I love  ministering and changing peoples lives through music.”

The late Whitney Houston’s mother, Cissy Houston will be in attendance again this year and Vickie sympathetically expressed how she can’t wait to wrap her arms around her the Gospelfest.

I thoroughly enjoyed the time spent with my queen of Gospel, Vickie Winans and I appreciate knowing that she loves THE CHURCH Lady Blogs, she  thinks I am funny and said I  crack her up, Wow! that is such a compliment, cause I feel the same way about her. If you have not had the opportunity to see the funny side of Vickie Winans, purchase the DVD, Hillarious and Unplugged,  you will not be disappointed, I promise!

I praise God for her witness and her steadfast faith in God to do ALL that God has gifted her to do.  follow her on Twitter   y’all and make sure you treat your Mama to this year’s  McDonald’s Gospelfest!

Kanye West dating Katy Perry: Say it ain’t So!!!

by The Churchlady

"kanyewestandkatyperry.jpg"

Katy Perry and Kanye West are rumored to be dating following their public appearances during Paris Fashion Week, where sources say the pair appeared to be more than friends at one particular show. Wait a minute wasn’t Kim Kardashian his date during Paris Fashion Week?  and didn’t Katy just get out of a bad marriage? Lord y’all make sure to squeeze  Kanye and Katy on our  ”celebrity world” prayer list.

By Benge Nsenduluka , Christian Post Contributor

“Katy hung around [at the fashion show] until everyone left. Then she hopped into Kanye’s Mercedes- and went to the afterparty,” an eyewitness told MediaTakeOut.

“Katy and Kanye were near each other all night, not all over each other, just close like they were trying to hide it … And after about an hour, they both inconspicuously left together,” the source added.

Perry, 27, recently signed her final divorce papers after ending her marriage to British comedian, Russell Brand, and critics fear that the “devastated” singer may be trying to establish a new relationship to deal with her hurt from the divorce.

“[Katy] was brought up with the belief marriage is forever and feels she failed. The plan was for Katy and Russell to have the holidays apart, then see if they wanted to go through with a separation,” a source told Us Magazine.

Although West is often romantically linked to Kim Kardashian, who along with Perry had attended his runway show afterparty, onlookers claim that the “Love Lockdown” rapper and Perry appeared to be genuinely involved and almost inseparable.

West, a 34-year-old hip-hop mogul and fashion designer, was left red-faced after one fashion critic accused him of using similar looks to renowned fashion designer label Givenchy in his own collection.

“Kanye West collection was so Givenchy-esque that it’s embarrassing that Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci was an expected guest. Ten points off for copying the smart guy sitting next to you,” the Wall Street Journal’s Christina Binkley wrote.

Others criticized West’s repeated use of animal fur among other aspects of his show.

“When Joan Smalls closed the show, wearing an adhesive black gauze dress with a strip of alligator running up the front, it seemed as if Mr. West’s approach to making a dress was like a cook wrapping leftover turkey,” New York Times fashion writer Eric Wilson wrote.

Son of Megachurch Pastor Tony Evans Advances on the TV Show “The Voice” (video)

by The Churchlady

Anthony Evans did not rely on the name of his father and megachurch pastor, Dr. Tony Evans, or a traditional gospel song to help him advance past the blind auditions on the television show “The Voice” Monday night.

Evans, the son of a chaplain for the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks and NFL’s Dallas Cowboys, spoke about his father before his blind audition in the television show seeking to showcase the best vocal abilities in the country.

“My dad, his name is Dr. Tony Evans and in the Christian world he is pretty well known. He started the church with 10 people in an apartment 36 years ago and now it’s over 8,000 people in Dallas,” Anthony said. “He’s written like 40 books and has a radiobroadcast that’s on 500 stations all over the world, so that’s my dad. I started to feel this pressure that (I have) to be something because (my) dad is something.”

However, Evans said his father never applied any pressure to live up to his achievements directly, which prompted the 33-year-old contestant on “The Voice” to stay true to himself.

“I just want to convey the message of being yourself and you don’t have to be perfect,” Evans told host Carson Daly. “You can be authentic and you can be who you are.”

Evans arrived to the competition with gospel musician Kirk Franklin and his father, who watched from a screen backstage as he sang Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On?” Christina Aguilera chose to work with Evans, although Cee Lo Green admitted that he had contemplated doing so. Aguilera, Green, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine are each looking to select 12 singers whose talent they can help develop in a competition in which television viewers will determine the best vocalist.
